Tom Kelso is currently a Strength & Conditioning Specialist with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department. He specializes in program development for commissioned officers and assists with the training of future officers in the police academy.
A 23-year veteran of the college strength & conditioning field, he served as Coordinator or Head Coach for Strength and Conditioning at Saint Louis University (2004-2008), the University of Illinois at Chicago (2001 – 2004), Southeast Missouri State University (1991-2001) and the University of Florida (1988-1990). He first started in the strength and conditioning field as an Assistant Strength Coach at Florida in 1984, where he was also a weight training instructor for the Department of Physical Education from 1985 to 1988.
In May 2006, Kelso received the title of master strength and conditioning coach, which is the highest honor awarded by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCa), for his years of service at the collegiate level. He received an honorary certification from the International Association of Resistance Trainers (I.A.R.T.) for life-long contributions to the exercise and fitness industry in 2001. In 1999, he was named National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Ohio Valley Conference Strength and Conditioning Professional of the Year.
In other related experience, Kelso was a graduate assistant for the Western Illinois University men's track and field team in 1982-83 and was a men's and women's assistant track and field coach at Central Missouri State University in 1983-84. He has worked with athletes at the Olympic and professional levels, presented at various clinics and seminars and has worked several athletic-related camps. A strong advocate of safe, practical and time-efficient training, Kelso has had numerous articles and book chapters published promoting those ideals. His solo project, The Interval Training Manual, is a comprehensive collection of more than 520 interval running workouts for all sports and abilities. He also serves on the advisory board of the I.A.R.T.
Kelso received his bachelor's degree in recreation education from the University of Iowa and earned his master's degree in physical education from Western Illinois. He holds C.S.C.S. and S.C.C.C. certifications with the NSCA and CSCCa, respectively.
